LONDON, UK (AP) — A new company that sells a new drug to treat heartburn is trying to convince the Food and Drug Administration about its long-term safety and effectiveness.
In a letter sent to its doctors, a company spokesman said the company's marketing strategy was to focus on the treatment of patients who can't go back to their old prescriptions and are taking a new drug to treat their heartburn. "We don't think of this as a treatment for cancer patients," said Michael Kimes, who runs the company, based in London. "We do not think of this as a treatment for heartburn."
The company's marketing plan has not been approved by the FDA, the agency said.

"We want to provide patients with the lowest possible dosage," he said. "We understand that our patients may not be able to tolerate the amount of medicine we give them."
The company also said it was looking at other ways to improve its heartburn treatment and would continue to do so.
The FDA is reviewing whether the drug is safe and effective in humans, said its spokesman, Dr. David Fridley, "and we are confident we'll continue to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this new product as well."
The company also said it was reviewing a letter sent to its doctors from the company, asking them to make a decision based on information in the company's marketing materials.
"In general, the marketing of this new drug is not based on medical advice," said Dr. David Fridley, who is also a spokesman for the company.
The letter, he said, was not sent to doctors. "It is not a marketing issue," he said, "and it is not for public health."
A spokesman for AstraZeneca said he expected the company to make a decision soon.

NEW YORK —By A. J.umbai(Reuters) -- U. S. regulators approved an effort by AstraZeneca to increase its use of an over-the-counter drug for heartburn and acid reflux, but the company's U. patents on the drug are still valid.
The approval, which will be given to the U. Food and Drug Administration, has been rejected by the agency, in the wake of a lawsuit by Abbott Laboratories, the drug's manufacturer and a number of other companies.
In a statement, the agency said: "We take great care to ensure that this product is used under the proper conditions and for the best possible effect. We continue to believe that our regulatory decision and this decision will be upheld."
The company's effort was part of a worldwide effort to create a new heartburn drug that would be cheaper than older heartburn drugs, which cost $1 per pill, or more expensive than the popular Nexium and Prevacid in 2023.
The company also plans to develop a more convenient, non-prescription drug for patients suffering from frequent heartburn, but the company has not yet disclosed the price for its product.
